Q: Do I need a partner?
|
A: Tango is a couple dance, danced with a partner. But you don't need to come to class with a partner. We often find we have even couples, sometimes too many men and sometimes too many women. Don't worry, come and trust it will work out. |
Q: I have never danced at all OR I am really bad at dancing OR I have two left feet. But I really would like to learn tango. Do you think I will be able to learn it?
A: Absolutely! The most important thing is your wish. Besides, tango requires a different skill set than other dances. Because it's so much about communication you need presence and focus. Because communication requires precision it helps if you are willing to work at it.
|
Q: I have learned other dances before, does that mean tango will be easy for me?
A: Having learned other dances indicates you like dancing and that is of course helpful. But be prepared to learn from tango scratch.
Q: How long will it take for me to learn tango?
A: You can learn the basic elements of tango and some basic steps in hours spread out over a few weeks. After that, expect to spend years mastering the basics and adding to your tango vocabulary. You will be at it for the rest of your tango life.
Q: I am 50+. Will it be OK for me to join?
A: Absolutely. While tango is ageless, in Delhi you find us from 20+ to 60+.
Q Why is there Class & Practica & Milonga?
A: Each forwards your tango career in a different way and the three combine synergistically to improve your tango. The Class, of course, is for learning - key elements and steps. At the Practica you deliberately p r a c t i c e what you have been learning. Work at it in other words. At the Milonga you simply enjoy dancing.
Q: Is there a dress code for tango?
A: The ideal combination is functionality with a touch of elegance. You must be able to move - and not get too hot (still you'll find deodorant a must).
Q: What kind of shoes should I wear?
A: Here comes the shoe lecture! FIRST, carry the shoes you will dance in and change into them at the venue. Sand and dirt do not belong on the dance floor. SECOND, your shoes must be comfortable, not too clumsy, stay on your feet and glide on the floor. For women this means a strap is useful and that shoes that are closed at the toe and heel work better than ones that are open. Leather soles are ideal, but use your common sense and test the shoes. Soft rubber soles that grip the floor are obviously out. Reportedly you can find shoes that fit these criteria in Delhi if you just look around a little bit.
Q: As a woman, must I wear shoes with high heels?
A: No. It's your choice. The main thing is that your shoes are comfortable and fun to dance in. Heels can be elegant, but they need not be super high.
Q: Where do I find tango music?
A: Delhi is not a great place for finding tango music and for "danceable" music even more difficult. Here are some suggestions for how to find tango music on the internet.
